Whether you’re a beginner just getting started or a seasoned traveler, here are 10 travel photography tips that will help you take stunning images.
1. Invest in Quality Gear
Having quality equipment is important but that doesn’t mean you need to break the bank. Do some research and invest in a setup that works for you. And keep an eye out for sales when it comes to cameras, lenses, and other accessories. Shopping Prime Day or Black Friday sales are a great way to find the gear that fits within your budget.
2. Bring Extra Batteries
Make sure to bring extra batteries! Packing extras so that you don’t have to worry about running out of power while shooting is key. When you are traveling you take a lot of pictures, trust me. And there is nothing worse than having your camera die before the day is over.
3. Plan Ahead
Researching ahead of time can help ensure that you can take advantage of good light conditions and unique spots. There have been more than a few times where doing some Googling before has come in handy to avoid long lines. Knowing where you want to go also makes it easier for you to plan what gear to bring or photos to take.
4. Take Your Time
Don’t rush through your shots and take your time. Even if you have to take a few extra shots, making sure you take your time and don’t rush will give you some amazing photos!
5. Use Natural Light
Natural lighting is always better than artificial lighting when taking photos outdoors. It creates soft shadows and brings out vibrant colors in your images that them a more natural, organic feel. If you can, try shooting during golden hour (just before sunset) or blue hour (just after sunrise) for some especially stunning pictures!
6. Remain Flexible
Don’t get discouraged if something doesn’t turn out exactly as you hoped or expected. Remain flexible throughout and get creative when something isn’t working. Remember, you can quickly switch gears and try something else!
7. Keep It Simple
Don’t be afraid to keep things simple. I promise you that sometimes less really is more when it comes to photography, so don’t feel like every shot has to be complicated or overly detailed in order to look good! Some of my favorite photos I’ve captured have been those that I didn’t overthink or try too hard to get. Don’t forget that overthinking can get in the way sometimes.
8. Experiment With Angles
Trying different angles can add depth to your photography so don’t be scared to play around with different perspectives.
9. Stay Organized
Keeping track of all your photos is just as important as how you take them. Have a system in place that organizes them into folders based on date/location/subject matter. Trust me, it will make it much easier for you to find any particular photo later on down the road.
10. Be Creative
Have fun with your pictures while you travel. Don’t be afraid to experiment! You can really get creative techniques like long exposure shots, multiple exposure shots, or even using creative framing techniques.
