I feel like I’ve never done so much skincare reasearch as I have since we moved to Illinois. This past winter, I wasn’t prepared for how cold and windy Chicago gets. I was totally caught off guard when it came to my winter beauty regime and my skin suffered for most of January because of it. This year, I decided to be ready and do a little bit more research so I could be prepared. Along the way, I discovered all of the great beauty benefits of vitamin C that I never knew about!
Since you all let me know how much you enjoyed my post about finding my perfect skincare products, I figured I’d share these vitamin C benefits with you. I wasn’t expecting it to have such a vital role in the health of my skin and you can bet that I’ve made sure that vitamin C is an active part of my skincare now.
Vitamin C benefits
I’ll be the first to say that I never really thought much about vitamin C aside from boosting your immune system. It never occurred to me that it would have beauty benefits! But I’m not the only one – if you ask people about vitamin C chances are the first thing that comes to mind is a nice lemon or orange. Not many will be able to tell you that vitamin C, as an antioxidant, helps protect your cells from free radicals.
Slows signs of aging
Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant! And one of the reasons why it is so great for your skin is because of its ability to neutralize the damage your cells can get from free radicals in the environment. Every day, our skin is hit with UV light and pollution which cause damage. Vitamin C helps minimize that damage which usually manifests itself as discoloration and wrinkles. Some studies have found that vitamin C can help protect you against damage induced by UV rays.
Helps increase collagen
Collagen is has a hand in pretty much every part of the body, from skin and bones to tendons and blood vessels. It is one of those things that we all look for in beauty products because as you age your body starts to produce less of it so your skin becomes less firm. One of the best beauty benefits of Vitamin C is that it helps with collagen production.
Aids in elastin production
Like collagen, increased elastin production is another great beauty benefit of Vitamin C. Since vitamin C is highly acidic, it triggers an acceleration in elastin production. With more elastin, your skin looks plumper and smoother. Think of a rubber band and how every time you stretch it out it bounces back. That is what elastin does for your skin, it helps it bounce back! And that is also why it is so important.
Helps with hyperpigmentation
Vitamin C is also wonderful for hyperpigmentation both for treating and preventing it. It inhibits the production of melanin, the pigment that causes dark spots (and tanning). Products that contain Vimanic C have also been shown to help fade dark spots also. They help brighten and even out the skin tone.
Getting vitamin C through supplements or fruits/vegetables is a great way to get all the benefits. But if you feel like you need a little more, look into vitamin c-infused products, especially those that contain ascorbic acid as this is the most effective in penetrating the skin. Personally, I love serums to make sure that I am getting all the beauty benefits of vitamin C especially because I can always add a little to my moisturizer to help give it a little boost!
