Tim and I have been using Imperfect Foods for over quite a while now and I figured it was about time we did a proper review! I’ve had so many people ask me about Imperfect Foods lately wanting to know how I use it as a service and if I like it so here we go!
Imperfect Foods and Imperfect Produce
Imperfect Foods, formerly known as Imperfect Produce, was founded in 2015. They set out on a mission to reduce food waste and build a better food system for everyone. And as their name implied they offer imperfect (yet delicious) produce and other affordable food items. Imperfect Foods delivers them conveniently to your doorsteps. They are proving that doing the right thing for our planet doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg AND that shopping for quality ingredients can support the people and resources that it takes to grow our favorite foods.
How it works
First things first, you’ll have to check to see if Imperfect delivers to your area. I had tried in both Florida and Tennessee years ago to sign up, but they weren’t delivering to our area. They are constantly expanding their delivery areas though, so if they don’t deliver to your zip code its only a matter of time before they do! Be patient and sign up to get a notification when they do expand to your next of the woods.
When you sign up, you’ll select what kind of box you want. You’ll choose between their Green Box (which is organic produce) and the Regular Box (which is conventional produce). This isn’t set in stone every week though! Just pick which type of produce you buy most often.
So each week they’ll start your order off with delicious, ugly produce that you can review, keep or change. Then, just like you go shopping through the isles at your grocery store, you can customize your order each week by shopping through the other products Imperfect offers! You can keep, add, or remove items from your box.
From there, you’ll finish setting up your account.
- Enter your email, create a password and then click “Continue”
- Enter your delivery information and click “Continue”
- Enter your payment information. Don’t forget the CVC number!
- Click “Complete registration”
If you’ve signed up during the customization window for your upcoming order, you’ll see the pink customization button on your account page and you can go right in to customize your first order. If your customization window isn’t open yet, you can see when it’ll open here! Imperfect will also shoot you an email when it opens to remind you.
Why we love Imperfect Foods
Imperfect Foods has been a game-changer for Tim and me. Since we follow a plant-based diet, I can do 80% of my grocery shopping via Imperfect Foods. I plan our meals around what is being offered on Imperfect for the week and then make our grocery list as needed. Some weeks, I order a lot more than others.
Aside from the amount of time that Imperfect Foods has freed up for me (hello, quick 20 min grocery runs!) I really love the root of their mission. On a food waste side, I think it’s amazing that they are diverting food from the landfill! Eliminating food waste is a big passion of mine and finding a company that is addressing it is really important for out household.
We’ve been using Imperfect Foods for over 6 months and the only “ugly” produce I’ve ever gotten was the carrot legs that are pictured earlier in the post. I would say that most of what I see listed is surplus food or produce that has size issues (either being too small or too big). The kicker? It all tastes the same!
I also love that Imperfect is helping low-income families get quality produce into their homes! Not only do they offer discounted boxes to families who qualify for them, but they also donate thousands of pounds of produce every week to food bank partners across the country! I also really, truly love that all jobs at Imperfect pay a living wage and that they pick up the boxes are produce is delivered in to be resued by food banks.
