North Carolina is one of the best states to head out on a road trip to, thanks to all it has to offer. From the great peaks to the storied history to the simple yet enjoyable tourist attractions, the Tar Heel state is going to keep you around for a good while to ensure you see and experience plenty!
But before you do head off, make sure you’ve got a plan in your head about how to proactively spend your time in the Old North. To help you out with that, we’ve got a short list of the activities to hit up first, to make sure you have as great a time as possible while you’re out in North Carolina.
The Historic Buildings
North Carolina has a long history, in terms of the founding of the United States, and that’s something you can easily revel in when you visit. Being the place that the very first plane took flight from, you can hop over to the Wright Brothers memorial, and when you’re done there, you can mosey on towards the Biltmore Estate & Gardens, also known as the largest residential building in the entirety of the US. Indeed, you could spend a whole day down at Biltmore, thanks to its sheer size and the fact that it also works as a museum, with plenty of antiques to snap some pictures of. When we lived in East Tennessee, Asheville was just a quick road trip away. We spent a number of weekends exploring the Biltmore Estate Grounds.
Extensive Mountain Activities
As we noted above, North Carolina is very famous for its mountainscape. From the Blue Ridge to parts of the Appalachian mountains, there’s a lot of great peaks you’ll want to visit and take snapshots of, and maybe even climb and hike through if you’ve got the time!
But the mountain activities don’t stop there. Seeing as North Carolina is so hilly, it only makes sense that you’ll find plenty of other things to do, such as sail down a Ski Resort or visit an Art Gallery. Similarly, while you can spend a lot of time in the National Parks that these mountain ranges form, you can also hit up a North Carolina golf course and spend the day driving those ranges too!
The Musical Culture of Asheville
Asheville is a famous place for those who love food and music, and if you’re a big fan of beer, you may want to grab a cab downtown instead of getting back into your car for the road trip! There are plenty of festivals you can hop along to, depending on the time of year you’re going, and you can be sure that any bar round any corner has some space for you to slip in and have a good time. Asheville obviously has some great night life as well, so don’t be afraid to enjoy yourself!
If you’ve got a trip to North Carolina planned, make sure your itinerary is set out in the best way possible. Include the beautiful outdoors, years of local history, and don’t forget to hit the music scene either!
