Major cities across the globe are defined by their sports teams. Whether it’s Manchester, New York, Sydney, Mumbai, Bueno Aires or London, they all possess thriving sports organizations. And Chicago is no different. Some of the world’s most legendary and recognizable sports teams ply their trade in the ‘Windy City’. Embarking on a trip to this famous hotspot is a must for sports aficionados from across the globe. So we’ve put together the top things to see in Chicago every sports fan needs to have on their radar!
Things to see in Chicago
One of the reasons we moved to Chicago was because it is such a great sports city. If a Chicago team is playing, you’ll see jerseys, hats, and fans all over town!
Not one, but two MLB teams!
Everyone loves an inter-city rivalry, and Chicago doesn’t disappoint with two of the most famous MLB teams striving for top billing in the same city. The Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox play their home games at opposite ends of the city and each has illustrious histories in the sport. Both teams’ home stadiums – Wrigley Field and Guaranteed Rate Field – are iconic venues in world sport with an aura that just oozes history, tradition, and success. We went to our first Cubs game earlier this year and had a blast!
Top tip: Check the team’s schedules before you head out, so you can try and take in match days at both teams.
Soccer is here to stay
Chicago is home to one of MLS’ most storied and historic franchises, Chicago Fire. Soccer continues to rise in popularity within the USA, and taking in an MLS game is certainly a different experience to more traditional American sports. For instance, the fan culture that epitomizes European soccer has slowly started to have an influence upon its American counterparts and as such, you will be sure to experience an electric atmosphere at a Chicago Fire game. Fire currently play their home games at SeatGeek Stadium, which is located in the south of the city and is easily accessible from downtown Chicago.
Top tip: Bastian Schweinsteiger, Chicago Fire’s marquee player, and Germany World Cup winner, is in the twilight of his career, so make sure you catch a glimpse of one of the world’s most gifted and celebrated midfielders before he hangs up his boots.
Bears v Packers – don’t miss it!
Professional sports are filled with historic, competitive and local rivalries. However, they don’t come much more fierce than the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers in the NFL.
With a combined 22 NFL championships between the two teams, this fixture is one not to miss. Steeped in history and dating back to the 1920s, the rivalry creates a truly unique atmosphere especially when it’s played at Soldier Field, the home of the Bears.
Top tip: If you’re lucky enough to be taking in a Bears game, read up on the safety guide for Soldier Field to avoid any delays when entering the stadium.
Chicago Blackhawks – an intense experience
Witnessing an NHL game live is one of the most intense experiences you can go through as a sports fan. The sheer ferocity, skill, and danger on display in one of these fixtures are incredible and the opportunity to watch a storied team such as the Chicago Blackhawks is one that you simply can’t turn down.
Top tip: If you’re not familiar with ice hockey before your visit a Blackhawks game, be sure to read up on some history about why this team is such a special attraction and about the NHL as a whole. For example, did you know that there’s a host of spelling errors on the famous Stanley Cup?
Bulls v Knicks – two great cities, one winner
The Chicago Bulls are one of the NBA’s most recognizable teams, in part due to their association with Michael Jordan. The most storied player of all-time, Jordan’s career with the Bulls spanned two spells, from 1984 to 1993 and from 1995 to 1998.
Taking in a Bulls game is simply a must during any trip to Chicago, but we’d recommend making the experience extra special by watching a Bulls v Knicks rivalry to get a sense of real Chicago sporting atmosphere.
Top tip: Make sure you get a memento from your experience at Bulls game to remember for life. Don’t worry though, there’s an excellent selection of merchandise available at all Bulls home games.
With so many great things to see in Chicago, this sports-loving city will make sure every fan has a great time! Even if you aren’t a Chicago team fan checking out some of these is worth it because if anyone knows how to be a fan its Chicagoans!
